Music is my life

Oo Kar Yan achieved her ABRSM Grade 8 piano exam in less than two years of learning and earned a Silver Award at the EuroAsia Piano Competition 2023 within just seven months of study, under the guidance of Ms. Nicole SL Yap, the Academy Director of Ideal Music.

Among her notable achievements are winning the Gold Award at the YEFF2024 Piano Competition in Penang and receiving the Bronze Award for piano in the ASWARA Young Talent Competition in 2024. She has also earned Gold and Silver Awards in solo vocal competitions, including the 2018 APAF, Kuala Lumpur and the VIB Classical Series Competition 2024 under the 19–25 category. Additionally, Kar Yan was invited as a member of the YCA Chorus to participate in Korea’s 1st International Choral Event in October 2024 and contributed to winning a Gold Award with the MIA Ladies Chorus at the Malaysian Choral Eisteddfod (MCE) International Choir Festival 2023.

Her performance repertoire includes appearances at Ideal Music’s in-house concerts, where she was recognized with the Best Performance Award in 2022. She has also performed at prestigious events such as Uncover Talent 2019 and Unleash Talent Shine On Stage 2023. Notably, she was invited to perform at the 74th Anniversary Celebration of the 马来西亚南安刘氏公会 alongside Ms. Nicole SL Yap and Mr. Stanley SF Chin. Kar Yan further showcased her musical talents at the MIA Departmental Concerts in 2023 and 2024, among other engagements.

Beyond her performances, Kar Yan serves as the Assistant Secretary of the NGO Persatuan Pencinta Musik Ukulele Malaysia (PPMUM) and. She is currently pursuing a Diploma in Music at the Malaysia Institute of Art (MIA) and serves as the Vice President of both the Music Society and MIA Chorus.
